Perseverance

Rain Forecast, Perhaps Snow... the mere thought of snow simply mortifies me. If I had wanted webbed feet I would have remained in England.. the amount of rain we have had in 2010 is really too much. The weather forecast say's that a severe storm will hit us mid-week but I am praying that it will not materialize.

My youngest grandson, Zach, has his 3rd birthday tomorrow and for weeks he has begged and pleaded for a battery operated tractor and farm trailer. We purchased it two weeks ago and it's been safely hidden.
Not knowing that his hearts desire is already his the begging and pleading continues. He is showing incredible focus and perseverance for a 3 yr old. Prayerfully it will be dry enough tomorrow for him to zoom around their property enough time for him to have fun.

* Perseverance: "Steady persistence in adhering to a course of action, a belief, or a purpose; steadfastness."
* prokarteresis suggest more than mere toleration of a circumstances....
* It means to be "earnest or strong towards; to be constantly diligent; to adhere closely to; to continue instant in; to be steadfast with a person or a thing."

I believe that I have been nothing but persevering ... I'm not too sure that I can persevere anymore.

You can become so confused about life, loyalty, character and what people regard to be right and wrong that it simply blows your mind. Has the whole world lost it's ever loving mind or is this restricted to Lincoln County?

We have such an incredibly small number of people within a 400 mile square radius most people can't even comprehend it. If I said 20,000 give or take a few, I wouldn't be far off. Yet every time you turn around someone else is embezzling large amounts of money.

There was yet another case this past week, a 70 year old given 3 years in jail for stealing over $100,000 from the Ruidoso Board of Realtors, the very SAME people who backed the GTR tax which means a continuance of an entire community depending on gambling as a foundation of their revenue.

Over $100,000 was the figure given when it came to the money being investigated from the churches the week prior.

Robert Huckins hit the magical $100,000 figure quite a few times in his criminal career, turning dozens of lives upside down in the process.

Our middle class is slowly dissolving in this recession. The working class are simply falling below the poverty level. I have known a lot of wealthy people, but despite the hardship the economy is subjecting some to I've never met any millionaire who was any happier because of their wealth. I have known more than a few who were miserable.

So what would possess someone to embark on a life of crime if it is going to cause such misery for all concerned?

I hear so much talk of "Patriotism" "Constitution" "Rights"as though America invented the words but rarely do I hear about "Character" "Honesty" "Honor ability" "Integrity."

A nation is nothing without those characteristics, because eventually criminal behavior will become the normal and we won't even bat an eye when someone steals large sums. It will be what we can expect because it will be what we deserve.

I want my grandson to grow into an honorable person, who walks an honest path with integrity. I want his word to be is bond, and a handshake to be a firm promise. I want him to look in the mirror and see the man God desires him to be.
I want that far more than he wants that battery operated tractor and trailer.

Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value. ~Albert Einstein

Leap Of Faith

Under extreme pressure from my employer to contact Senator Rod Adair I made a leap of faith and e-mailed him yesterday, attaching the engineers report with the e-mail, and explaining the dilemma.

Senator Adair contacted others within the government and said:

Please try to help her—as this has been an ongoing, nightmare of a problem for her for about three years or more.-Rod Adair

We will have to wait and see what happens now.Yesterday while picking up supplies for my employer Jesse Gordiola spotted my truck and caught up with me in the Walmart parking lot. Having been down to the property to check the progress of the house he had seen the red tags and wondered what was happening.

As a licensed contractor of 35+ years who owns a half dozen mobile homes he was stunned at the new CID laws yet he still wanted to help. The major problem is to try and overcome this new law, and obtain a homeowners permit to finish the trailer, and find some help to work with Jesse. A tall order in this region.

This morning my oldest daughter phoned to tell me that my mum has just been released from the hospital with a broken wrist. I can't find my passport or birth certificate amongst the tons of possessions that have been boxed and stored for the past 3+ years, with the British Embassy so far away, and ALL of my money tied up in this house without any available funds to buy a plane ticket I am simply panic struck. But my daughter has her passport out and ready should she need to fly back to England.

By late afternoon I got an e-mail from a mutual friend saying: "She slipped in the bathroom & got the break & has a small pot on for 3 weeks."

Giving a HUGE sigh of relief.

I am mortified that 3 years after my mothers money was stolen by American contractor, Robert Huckins, and with less than $2,000 of the $82,200 returned, I am still no further forward.
Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6

Tired Out Performance Horses

This has really been a day of serious deliberation.

I phoned my 37 yr old daughter after she left the school where she works and we discussed the options left for me.

When local law enforcement & the DA's office refused to investigate Robert Huckins for the theft of our building fund I had no idea how this was going to play out.

When the Governor of the State of New Mexico brought in white collar crime investigators, and criminal proceedings started, I tried to:

1) Acquire a derelict building to renovate, through Craigslist and development companies.
2) Acquire the Rafter 11 house.
3) Acquire the old hospital MRI building.
4) Acquire a FEMA trailer through Senator Adair.
5) Beg for volunteers to close in the barn so I could build a home working from the inside out, through Senator Adair and the Ruidoso News newspaper.
6) Contacted Habitat for Humanity, ALL church groups within the area and outside the area seeking help, through numerous people including Suzie Stockton and Gari of the District Attorney's office.
7) Obtain a modular on payments.
8) Sell the land with Assist-To-Sell.
9) Buy the shell of a trailer to renovate, through John Boyd.

The Ruidoso News newspaper issued at least four or five articles asking for help. I couldn't have had people try as hard, and for the length of time, the Ruidoso News newspaper have done though Gari and Suzie spent months trying. And I am confident that they would say the same about me.

Now I can't go backwards or forwards with the trailer I finally settled for, believing that I could renovate OUR OWN PROPERTY which is sat ON OUR OWN LAND, and turn it into a gorgeous mountain cabin, or tack room with living quarters, if nothing else.

You dare not open your mouth to these folks because the very second you say, "stucco" or "double pane windows," "new doors" or "tack room" it brings heart palpitations and panic attacks by government employees who have a home to go to.

It's already cost me $9,000 to get this far, and can't retrieve those funds. I may as well just sit and burn $100 bills instead of sweating it out trying to get into a warm home before it gets colder because the State of New Mexico has blocked all paths for me to continue the renovations.

The only path I can see available is putting a large tarpaulin over the trailer and moving into it as it now sits. If I can't "fix" the structural problems I just don't know what else to do but heed the warnings of the state and "not" fix them.

I'm so frustrated I am spitting nails.

My boss is having a wall eyed fit demanding that I contact Senator Adair.

My daughter frantically told me that I can't just move into a trailer that is mid-construction, without electricity or water, but I don't have the answer. I feel like I have done anything and everything possible and no matter which direction I turn the State of New Mexico has put up insurmountable road blocks.

I am defeated. Thoroughly defeated.

Tomorrow I need to start emptying the antique furniture that has been stored for 3+ years in a less than waterproof 4 horse trailer, and get it into the single wide where I can see what damage has been done, and repair it. And I need to start sinking gateposts.

I phoned Print to see if he could bring his bobcat and try to undo the mess inside the barn before the footings are eroded away, but his bobcat is in Roswell being repaired.

The engineering report speaks volumes. Of the structure it says:

On October 5, 2010
, I inspected the unfinished remodeling work in progress on the 66’x14’
Mobile home at the above premises. Several sections of water damaged particle board flooring have been replaced with ¾” thick plywood, about 16 feet of damaged exterior wall has been replaced with 2”x4” stud framing, a 3’ wide replacement door has been installed with a header of two 2”x4” boards, and two 4’x4’ windows have been installed with headers of two 2”x6” boards. No interior walls have been removed. There are a few more sections of damaged flooring and exterior wall framing that will be replaced. A scabbed 2”x4” has been added under the new windows at the rim joist. This must be removed and a new 2”x6” board that has been ripped to 4-1/4” which is the same dimension as the rim joist. The approximate length needed to span is 16 feet. The new scab may be placed in sections but must span the metal stringers and contact them in order to give full support to the new framing. With this modification, the new framing is acceptable and will meet the 2006 IBC for construction of a one story residence. The remaining windows, door and damaged sections may be replaced using the same framing as done so far and with the same addition of a ripped scab along the rim joist under the repaired sections.

For this I could be fined $1,000? Sounds like a criminal offense to me.

I have no energy to fight with anymore.

I'm changing my facility name to "Tired Out" - moving into a house that doesn't even have a back door or hallway floors but I GUARANTEE that I won't fix anything and the State of New Mexico can sod off.

New Mexico C.I.D Twilight Zone

I spoke to Paul at Benchmark Engineers and he was simply wonderful. He was trying to get hold of Russell Wink to find out if the red tags had been removed, and asked me to do the same. Between the two we should have some success..

I reached Russell Wink on the first try. I now apply for the permits? Ahh, hold your horses here.. this is a whole new world.

This time it seems that I need someone licensed in trailer/modular renovations by the State of New Mexico. The State of New Mexico changed the laws on September 28th, 2010 and the homeowner can no longer apply for a homeowners permit to renovate their own home UNLESS THEY SIT A TEST.

Wasn't that 14 days ago? AFTER the trailer was red tagged? Why didn't CID allow me to apply for the permits BEFORE THE LAW CHANGED?

I TRIED to get a homeowners renovation permit on the 24th of September.
I tried AGAIN on the 27th of September.

BOTH times the request was turned down because they demanded an engineers report FIRST.

I feel like I am losing my ever loving mind here.

It's very difficult trying to speak when you have pneumonia, and inspector Russel Wink rightfully said that he wasn't responsible for the laws within the state of New Mexico - and he really isn't.

But when the State of New Mexico Construction Industries Division at ANY time tries to tell me that their laws are for MY benefit my response is always going to be simplistic.

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN ROBERT HUCKINS WAS STEALING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FROM VICTIMS ... BUILDING WITHOUT INSURANCE, WITHOUT PERMITS, WITHOUT INSPECTIONS, VIOLATING EVERY SINGLE CODE ON THE BOOKS?

YOU ARE A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT PROTECTING ME FOR GOODNESS SAKES.

You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. Having departed from the New Mexico Judicial System Twilight Zone your next stop is, The New Mexico Construction Industries Division Twilight Zone!

Tonight I was too ill to sleep, and remained fixed to the Chilean miners rescue. I am a coal miners daughter whose father, Irvin Fowell, was killed in a mining accident at Criggleston Pit.

When you are born and raised in a coal mining community, and when you are my age, you have stood at pit heads. You have heard the alarm signifying a collapse. You have lost loved ones. You have seen hope where there is no hope. It's an earth shattering experience to have people stuck underground. Years later no matter where it happens, or how it happens, you go back years and miles to another time when you were personally involved.

To watch technology bring people out over 1/2 a mile, to see so many countries work together, to see rescue's happen that would have been unthinkable 50 years ago - to watch a miracle, is nothing short of amazing.

Between A Rock & A Hard Place

Seeing that today was a holiday my boss told me to do "nothing." Which isn't a bad idea seeing as this damp cold weather has settled in my limbs & lungs and I feel simply awful.

I still have not heard from John, nor the engineer so everything is in "hurry up and wait" status. The weather is amazingly nice after all of the wet weather, but it still didn't get over 67 degrees - which isn't bad for October.
I can't believe that Thanksgiving and Christmas are so close, and I'm so far away from finishing this home.

I went to Walmart to buy a phone card for my cell phone before it is due to expire sometime this afternoon.

There I bumped into friends of 20 years or so and we spoke about the house trailer, CID, the absolute insanity of the American government on so many levels. The illusion of "life, liberty & pursuit of happiness" that is certainly not available in the United States, ask any victim of crime to verify that fact. The recent 'special election" supporting Hubbard & Allred and the ministry woes of finding the missing money, some of whom are saying is $100,000 - rightly or wrongly. That figure certainly has not been verified but it appears that the money has been found and is intact.

While listening to the dilemma with the lack of help, then the Construction Industries Division complicating matters and delaying what already seems like an insurmountable problem Deanna suggested that she could write a cartoon series titled, "Between a rock & a hard place."

I was okay until they asked how my mum was, and that dug so deep into my heart I was having a hard time retaining a smile on my face.

By 5 pm John returned the multiple calls I had made to him. After a week-end of partying at the Cowboy Symposium he said he was in a taxi cab heading to the Houston, Texas airport and flying to Argentina.

You just couldn't make any of this up if you tried... this is so far past fiction it is right in the middle of fantasy.
I guess it was pointless asking if he had the welder with him so we could get the barn roof up.

Everyone Must Row With The Oars They Have...

Yesterday I spent a few hours finishing up painting the exterior of the concrete barn. I returned to Alto exhausted and intended to take a nap around 2.30 pm, but didn't wake up until 8.45 pm.
Not until I woke up did I realize that I was covered in "adobe" colored paint. I wonder if I could market it as "body art."

The weather yesterday was simply gorgeous. Not a rain cloud in sight, warm enough to be comfortable. It was one of the very first days I have enjoyed working without fretting over impending rain.

Even in this situation I had to see the humor of one middle aged woman with NO building knowledge stood in the middle of a building site, trying to make lemonade out of lemons. The property has to be one of the most beautiful pieces of land I have ever been on. It is the most peaceful and isolated place, where deer and elk wonder in and vehicles are rarely seen.

Half the land, where the barn was built, is in a small "valley" where the water has washed down top soil from higher elevations for thousands of years. It's not a large piece of land, but it certainly is a nice piece of land.

After I received the infamous e-mail sent through the Methodist Church I went into sheer panic - a serious panic attack - and phoned Bob at Assist-To-Sell and explained what had happened, asked him to get rid of it. I so wanted to get out of Lincoln County, I was so deeply hurt.

Yet every plan I made to leave fell apart days before I was due to drive away. It was one thing after another.

I can't fault Bob at Assist-To-Sell for he tried above and beyond what any real estate agent could have done, and the land, like almost all land in Lincoln County during this recession, wouldn't sell. Perhaps I wasn't supposed to leave. I have been here almost all my adult life, I can't imagine having to start all over again somewhere I don't know anyone.

This month the contract with Assist-To-Sell expires. Until the economy regains some strength nothing is going to sell unless it's literally given away.

Weeks ago, while Larry & John replaced the living room windows and put in a new door I was so ill all I could do was sit in the living room of the trailer and watch them work. Looking out of those windows, into the front paddock, with the Capitan mountain range as a backdrop, was one of the prettiest and most serene experiences I have ever had.

The fact that it was a $1,000 junked trailer instead of a $82,200 adobe style home didn't decrease that view, and the peacefulness of the land.

After finishing painting I started looking around to see what I could do.
Clearly the roof is going to have to go on the barn in this waiting period. The damage being done to the brand new construction material is causing me some serious grief and worry. I simply can't afford to replace it, but legally can't use it.I agree with John that there is much we can do inside the trailer that is within the law. But to add to the frustration I can't reach John, and have no idea where he is so I'm fairly confident that we will not be working on anything this week-end, when the weather is just perfect.

Wintery Warnings

34 degree's and so wet this morning.

Yesterday I tried to work on the barn without a great deal of success.

From January of 2010 the inside of the barn had been left with huge mountains of soil throughout and the concrete footing have been left open to the elements .. constant flooding, rain, snow. Brand new metal house (storm) doors destroyed and buried under the dirt.

Trying to get inside a 2,000 square foot concrete block barn with interior "dividing" walls to replace the dirt has been almost impossible for me. I physically can't move tons of soil soaked in water.

Jan and Mike Aldridge went to look at the barn a few weeks ago to see if they could get inside with their small tractor. They couldn't, not without tipping the tractor on it's side. So after talking with Bob, Jan, Mike and John it became obvious that if the barn was to be saved from having the footing eroded, and put into use... the dirt HAS to be put back by hand. Pick and shovel time. What an ominous task ahead.

I managed to paint some of the exterior barn walls before the storm clouds started to accumulate overhead, but this is the very first time I have not walked inside that trailer. I just couldn't stand the thought of going inside and seeing so much work needing to be done, and not being allowed to do a thing.

I did walk up to the two new windows in the living room and ran my hand down the half finished wall the state of New Mexico refuses to let us complete. The constant rain is ruining the material, rain water is going onto the brand new floor daily. Behind the brand new door the wood is already coming up.
It simply breaks my heart.

My own health has started to fail again. I can't breath, can't stop coughing and I'm losing my voice. My temperature is soaring, then dropping, then soaring again. I feel simply awful. Getting through the summers has been difficult but the winters are an absolute killer for me, with more health problems than I can function with. So the summers have been geared towards trying to get into a home before winter arrived.

The Ruidoso News newspaper has done front page article after front page article simply begging for help. This is as depressing and disgusting for them as it is for me.

It's been so long since I could walk into a home, make dinner and eat at a table. Take a shower and walk into a bedroom. Know the warmth of a home while watching the snow fall outside. Know the security of being able to relax as the rain pours.
Those things have not been mine for many years. And trying to get back into a home has become an exercise of frustration. This is a nightmare.

On or before the 10th of October Robert Huckins is scheduled to pay me another $450. If there was a way to force the money out of him in a timely manner that amount would buy me HALF of the first of the two utility poles I need to get the electricity turned on and working.

The courts really don't want to inconvenience a convicted felon by making him return the building fund. That would be too cruel.

I work for an old cowboy who has been, to put it mildly, and absolute bugger for most of his 86 years. Everyone knows this, and his wild and woolly stories ( some of which are true) have made him quite a fixture in the ranching world. I have worked for him for a lot of years, shortly after Jim and I moved to Alto.

Last year he sold his arena, but maintained a small corral for his roping horses in the barn/shed I am staying in. I begged him not to sell, but as long as he had horses to ride he seemed quite happy. For a while.

Today he goes back and forth making statements that I listen carefully to. Having people "peep" through his front windows rattled him pretty seriously, moreso when the woman started walking into the house uninvited. Then he got upset because the same people were delving into his personal affairs.

One morning he stood bewildered saying that they phoned his son and told him that the registration on his truck had expired and my boss was simply horrified. How on earth did they know that the registration had expired. The truck is kept 24/7 inside a closed garage. It is a 2006 truck, the same year as my Ford350, with less than 19,000 miles on it. It rarely see's daylight.
Yet they knew that the registration had expired, and I KNEW that they go check country records and find a way to get information because they had done it with my land.

Trying to calm him down I explained, truthfully, that it wasn't "personal" for they researched whether my property taxes had been paid AND requested my medical records. In fact getting her away from demanding my medical records was an absolute nightmare the like I have never before seen. It simply reduced me to tears.

Even trying to make the excuse that they were military medical records didn't slow her down - she was ready to take on the military. I was a nervous wreck, it was the most bizarre thing I had ever heard of, and I was already trying to cope with court trials and a felony case days away that were exhausting me.

My boss claims that he sold the land but maintained a right of way to enter the horse corral from the rear lane. The new owners put logs across the lane preventing anyone from entering.
So in the spring of 2010 he demanded that I move the logs. Insisting that the road was a legal right of way, and his horse shoer needed to get in.

I didn't want to move the logs and we started arguing about the consequences. I begged him to leave them alone so as not to cause problems. But he pay's my paycheck so move the logs I eventually did, grumbling audibly.

Because I know how vindictive these people can be, because I had heard the constant threats, I expected that by sun-up the next day the logs would be back across the lane.

But that didn't happen. Surprise, surprise.

Within TWO HOURS they arrived with a backhoe full of rocks, dirt and boulders and dumped the whole lot across the right of way an 86 yr old claims is his. I just happened to be walking from the house to the horse corral with Print when the backhoe was leaving and I shook my head in dismay and asked him, "Why would anyone do that to an 86 yr old?"

Print just sighed and said, "Some folks are just plain mean."

Print promptly jumped into his 350 and drove right over the top of the pile of rocks, boulders and dirt. I stood with my boss saying, "Well here we go, now Print has taken the truck over it and all hell will break out."

My daughter, grand-children and I were walking through Walmart a few days later. The woman who owned the backhoe approached us and started going on about that load of dirt and boulders and rocks. I stopped her and explained that I am an employee and this has nothing to do with me. She stormed off saying that she would "talk to my boss then."

My daughter laughed saying, "Well who else should she talk to - it's nothing to do with you." I smiled and said, "Some people just want to cause misery and if they can't use you as a punching bag they feel deprived." And the game of slapping at people, then buying cookies or shampoo and offering gifts. Of saying that they care deeply, then coming out with vicious demeaning statements, has worn thin.
Or as the old saying goes, "the gig is up."

A few weeks ago the entire street had a "block" yard sale. As I drove out I noticed a hay barrow sat in one yard and stopped to inquire about the price. For $15 I bought it. The house just happened to be almost, but not quite, directly opposite to the Presbyterian minister/pastor. He was outside, as was the neighbor I was buying the hay barrow from, and the woman with the backhoe was walking towards me. "Oh, I have sold your bosses television" she declared. "But he refuses to answer his door. IS HE DRUNK?"

I have not seen my boss drink alcohol in 12 months or more. Not even a cocktail. Nor has anyone else. I have seen him hide in his bedroom terrified to come out because someone is peeping through his windows, and the woman is well aware that he hides from her.

For myself this entire situation was Lesson 101 in poisoning the minds of everyone around. It was professional level one-up-man-ship.

I was suddenly stuck in a situation where I could have told the truth and said that he was trying to evade her. But it seemed so confrontational in front of another neighbor and the Presbyterian pastor. Or I could slink away embarrassed. Not wanting a confrontation I decided to do the latter but I was so nervous that I couldn't have got that barrow in the back of my truck and got away fast enough. I was visibly shaking, almost on the verge of crying.
I sorely regretted stopping at that yard sale.

And I knew that these degrading demeaning comments, twisting facts, telling untruths, sarcasm at this level took years of practice, and I had certainly been the focus of her wrath during 2010. Yet for the life in me I couldn't understand what would make a person this way.

Yesterday my boss sat reflecting on how mean people have become. He mentioned his tree's that are dying because the same woman decided to pour weed poison around them - without his permission. He planted them outside his bedroom window, specific species to provide food for the indigenous wild birds in this area. She didn't like them so she poured poison on them, and they sit brown and withered.

He sat almost wistfully reminiscing of what life was like when people didn't peep in your windows, or walk in unannounced, or threaten to phone the health department, or housing association, or government offices when you refused to jump when they told you to jump.

Standing at the kitchen window he looked down the lane at the pile of rocks and dirt and said, "You know, they had no right to do that. I had the right of way and they had no right at all. But I have not said anything."

Fact is, he's too old to face a fight or put up with the continual drama those people bring. And I am too. It's easier to accept their cookies and try to placate them, and not have anyone cause waves. So at the end of the reminiscing he sighed and said, "That's just the way they are I guess. I have lived here over 60 years and had some good neighbors and good friends.. never had any trouble. This place has turned positively evil. Good people can't survive here anymore."

I walked outside and looked towards the Sierra Blanca, and I couldn't help but wonder. Could a location be positively evil? When I arrived it was a ranching community with strong ranching value's. Today it's turning into Santa Fe or Taos.

My youngest daughter, who was raised here, say's that it has, "Lost it's soul."

I look at the beauty around me and it's such a shame.

Yesterday John announced that what needed to be done to get me into a home needed to be done fast - because he is leaving New Mexico.

Last week we had scheduled to put the roof over the top of the house, and start to put the roof over the top of the barn. This week John say's that he doesn't have access to the trailer designed to haul and weld the pipe being transported from the oilfields.

We sat talking about the work that could "legally" be done. A mountain of brand new plumbing material was left thrown up alongside the arroyo by "volunteers" but each builder who has looked at it declared it no longer usable. We could gather up all the trash and haul it off. We could put in the gateposts & corner posts and set them in concrete, but we have more rain in the forecast.

There are so many built in cupboards inside the trailer that must be taken out, the stop work order demanded that we stop renovating. It said nothing about ripping out. I suggested that we could start taking out all those rotten cupboards, seeing as nothing is going to be replacing the cupboards.

But, the reality is, we can do nothing but the mere lipstick and rouge. Prayerfully starting with the dirt being replaced onto of the footings in the barn.

Two hours after I left the property hail started to pound down in fury. The hail turned to rain and it rained, and rained, and rained. A dry winter may be a welcome sight after this summer.

GOD didn't promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, nor sun without rain. But HE did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears and light for the way.

Truth & Honesty: A Rare Commodity

I woke up at 2.30 am so damp and cold I could barely move, my spine and hips and ankles causing me excruciating pain. And the pain setting off a migraine headache.

There has still been no word if we can finish renovating the trailer so I can have a decent home to live in quickly.

I spoke to John, who said that he was coming to Ruidoso this coming week-end but I forgot to ask him if he intended to help me. With the Cowboy Symposium a strong distraction I am biting my nails fearing that I won't get any help this week.

Please, God, let him help me at least undo the damage in the barn and set the poles ready for the roof to be put on. Start to pull out the cupboards in the kitchen nook. Do ANYTHING that we can legally do to circumvent this New Mexico Construction Industries Division block on renovating the trailer which will get me closer to moving onto that land and into a home.

On Tuesday I telephoned the New Mexico Conference of the United Methodist Church to see if Diana Lippett had spoken to the bishop, as promised.
She had, and she apologetically explained that the Methodist church was not responsible for what lay-people, with official positions within the emergency services of the church do or say no matter what the damage sustained.

This lady has been so wonderful I didn't want to even start asking questions knowing that she was merely a secretary betwixt a rock and a hard place, but I found myself asking perhaps the most important question: "Has not one person ever spoken to this woman and asked for the source of her information?"

I think I am perfectly aware of "whom" started this wildfire of lies and deception that was intended to cause confusion. But I need verification to stop it from causing me further damage, because this is causing serious long term damage.

The media think that I will never get anyone to tell "truth" and I'm wondering why "truth" should be something so difficult to get from people of faith whose foundation stone is truth itself.

I have managed to handle this situation with calmness and understanding for all concerned for almost a year. No-one should have to beg for a year for something as simple as truth. The Methodist counsel have twice told me to seek legal counsel, but to seek legal counsel means to walk into MORE drama, and drama is what I have been trying to evade.

You have to hire a lawyer and proceed with legal action to force a CHRISTIAN to tell truth? What kind of nonsense is that?

The head of the Methodist Church for this district hangs the phone up when I ask him to find out where this information came from - when I request accountability - what kind of behavior is that?

And when the truth was revealed 7 or so months ago and both Senator Rod Adair and Pastor Todd Sazwedel read the e-mail that lied about them, and was directly defamatory against myself, why was an apology & correction from the Methodist Convention not forthcoming?

No Christian should be allowed to cause this degree of damage by spreading unsubstantiated lies and fabrications without accountability from someone within the denomination they represent, especially when they are in a leadership position in a ministry designed to help others. If they didn't manufacture the lies, but obtained the information from another person, they should be asked to reveal that source.

Ever since Robert Huckins stole the building fund not once has this group of Christians who say they are here to help, offered to help. But a conscious effort was made by at least one person who has contact with the group to make sure that no-one helped. That fact bothers me less than the degree of fabrication that was sent forth to make sure that my name was blemished, and my honesty put in question. The honesty of a pastor and state senator was likewise put in question but not with as damaging results.

If you are going to send bold faced defamatory lies about three separate individuals it would seem unwise to do so within a written e-mail sent to a different pastor within the same denomination.

So I am going to take this opportunity to ask yet again, Shirley, WHOM was your "source?" Part of the e-mail you sent out that contained not one iota of truth is being repeated by other business people in Ruidoso and it is causing serious damage. It is time to stop playing games with peoples lives and reputations.

There is a whole world of difference between refusing to help a person, because that is a right, and spreading libel, because that is a wrong, on so many levels. People cannot fabricate stories, downright lie ~ relate fiction as facts. It's inhumane and what is to be gained by it? Isn't there enough pain and suffering ~ and stress~ in this situation without adding to it by repeating whatever gossip your source "in the know" wanted to fabricate?

The Ruidoso News had already done so many articles unsuccessfully begging for help for me, you can't take away from me what was never offered. The ONLY thing that can be accomplished is to spread malicious gossip that holds no truth. But what is there to gain from that?

If one church starts saying, to anyone, that I have utilities on the land everyone will believe it. They won't contact Otero County Electric Co-Op to verify it. They won't contact Jesse Gordiola, who has complained from day one that we didn't have electricity. No electricity means no water. But you claim that your source 'was in the know. " If he/she was in the know why am I experiencing such difficulty getting utilities onto that land? I should be able to go and simply turn on a switch and it will all work.

If a church starts telling, anyone, that I asked for help building a home THAT is what will be believed. I never asked that. I BEGGED three years ago for help getting a roof on that barn because I thought that I could build a house working inside out. At the b-b-q held by Cheryl and Pete I said ~ loud and clear ~ that I would have been happy with a shed if I could just get the help I needed to make it liveable. And not one person around me heard anything different. If your source is "in the know" they should at least "know that!"

The person you claim is "in the medical field" wouldn't know a medical degree if it slapped them in the face. I have more of a medical degree than they do. And yes, they did appear like an angel of light but they caused more chaos and turmoil than I have ever seen before because they kept spinning yarns. I caught on very quickly as did others. And I tried to distance myself from it. I had too much on my hands with investigations and court trials to get pulled into the nonsense fabricated by a bored person who doesn't know what else to do but manufacture drama for their own amusement. This isn't a game. This isn't a mini soap opera to pre-occupy someone who can't keep out of anyone's business. This isn't funny. This is simply devastating.

If the church starts saying that Senator Rod Adair and Pastor Todd Sazwedel have been in contact with one another those who hear it will believe it because it came through you, and you claim that your source was "in the know." I walked up to Senator Adair in the Spencer Theater and almost accused HIM of doing this. A man who had done everything possible to help me, who has gone beyond a humanitarian duty - and I believed your e-mail because it came from someone "in the know."

Nothing but fabricated lies.. nothing but fiction. Not an ounce of truth in an entire e-mail. Few events have knocked me off balance as that e-mail did. I went from hanging on for dear life to suicidal within hours. Because I now not only had the judicial system, homelessness, my mother, my career, a career criminal, a missing building fund and investigation I was having to do myself compounded by someone within the church bold faced lying.... making sure that no-one would help me.
The entire e-mail is so ludicrous it's hard to go thorough every point but I will happily publish it and my responses, but when I asked "whom" this person is who is "in the know" the reaction is amazing. The "facts" could have been ascertained easily enough. The Ruidoso News newspaper was "in the know" and Todd Sazwedel was "in the know" for I had sent him an e-mail some months prior. But those sources were by-passed and we have this unknown figure who has neither a name nor a face who is "in the know" even though the repeat fabricated nonsense.

I am still asking WHOM would do this? Whom would stoop so low when someone is already battling so much heartbreak, hardship and insurmountable adversity?

I am sat right next door to the Presbyterian pastor who looks the opposite way each and every time I drive out of the yard. I have been adjacent to this pastor through some bitter winters. For a time period the pastor of the First Baptist church and his family stayed at the neighbor at the other side. I was sat directly between TWO of the leading pastors in this community. Yet not one would help. In fact, not once did they even inquire if I needed anything. Not even when there was 4 ft of snow outside.

Almost a month ago pastor Todd Sazwedel told me, in a phone conversation, "My heart bleeds for you." I actually like Todd and consider him an honest and honorable brother in Christ. But a month later my heart bleeds for this group who consider themselves doing the will of God when you can't even get truth from those who claim Christ.

And time was going to reveal even more, above, beyond and unrelated to my own situation...

Ministerial alliance addresses possible misuse of funds

In view of a New Mexico State Police investigation into possible misuse of money by one of their peers, members of the Lincoln County Mescalero Ministerial Alliance reacted quickly to improve their controls and to reassure the public.

This week, they prepared the following statement:

"The local Christian community is remarkable. Where, in other areas, each church fellowship strives to accomplish alone that which our Lord calls us to fulfill, Lincoln County and Mescalero Christian churches work together. Each involved church has chosen to lay aside their specific differences to create an atmosphere of cooperation and trust.

"This faith-based community of many Christian groups has joined together many times in benefiting Mescalero and Lincoln County.

"Recently, the Lincoln County Mescalero Ministerial Alliance has discovered mishandling of funds by an individual in our group. We realize these funds were generated in trust by our community. Measures have been taken to ensure that this matter is being handled in the best, most expedient manner possible so that any issue of this type will never happen again.

"This issue has not create a distraction from the Ministerial Alliance's main goal, that of being available to assist those in need.

"Typically, the Ministerial Alliance takes the responsibility of managing housing, meals and transportation for those who travel through Lincoln County and need assistance. At no time has this goal been abandoned during this incident. Regardless of this or any circumstances, the Ministerial Alliance is determined to stand as one.

"The Ministerial Alliance is one arm of the Christian community of Lincoln County and Mescalero. Several events in the last few years exemplify the desire of Christians throughout this area to work as one fellowship. From working to beautify public areas to rebuilding homes, from providing free auto oil-changes to refurbishing community parks, the Christian community stands together.

"Simply put, the Lincoln County/Mescalero Christian community wants to look like Jesus to those in our area who are hurting, need comfort or need care. Our community has not wavered, our desire to do what's right has not fallen and we will continue to make a difference in our area communities.

"The Lincoln County Mescalero Ministerial Alliance is determined to continue our efforts in a dependable and trustworthy manner. We will act truthfully and honestly in every area of our lives We anticipate even greater effectiveness as we stand as one in Lincoln County and Mescalero.

The Ruidoso News will have more on this developing story as public documents become available.

Lord, No More Losses Please...

It is simply beautiful weather, but the menacing thunder can be heard in the distance. I have still not heard from the engineer, or state, and don't know what to do about the trailer. I can't just sit here with thousands of dollars in building & renovation supplies sat in a trailer that isn't waterproof and time is simply flying by.

I got a phone call Monday night from the Lazy J, and Becky Washburn DVM got on the phone and said that Franie had gone into colic, twisted and was dying, and there was nothing anyone could do to save her. I asked Becky to euthanize.

I really didn't have the emotional investment in Franie that I normally have with my animals, especially not horses like Kontiki and Isaiah. Certainly not like Oscar.

She was somewhat of a rescue, a past western pleasure show horse from Michigan, and a terror to handle and ride.

She was the only horse I have ever met who literally hated human beings with a passion and there was no amount of handling going to change her mind. She would curl her nose up, draw her ears back and whip her rear end around each and every time a human approached her.

That hate made me terrified to let go of her. A difficult horse doesn't have much hope in this area, a difficult "mare" in gelding territory has double jeopardy. And a horse born in 1992 is too old a horse for anyone to even accept as a rescue if she is dangerous or difficult.

So having tried to find a home without success I kept her, promising to give her the best care and management, allowing her to run in a 60 acre pasture for the rest of her life. Nothing more than a pasture ornament living the life of Riley.

Everyone tried to convince me to get rid of her, send her to the auction even knowing that she would be heading to slaughter in Mexico. But I was determined to see it out unto the end and guarantee her a safe haven.

I shouldn't be sad, but I am. There really isn't anything to be sad when you lose a horse nearing it's 20th birthday, who has spent the last few years living a life of luxury and freedom.

Maybe it's the combination of everything.. no more losses please.

I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much. ~Mother Teresa

The Thunder Rolls & The Rain Falls

I can't locate John and he isn't answering his phone, so I have no idea how to bring the roof metal from Carrizozo. Even though it was beautiful in the morning the thunder started rolling and the rain poured . Maybe I should go to Wal-Mart and pick up another 5 gallons of "adobe" colored paint.

I have always been fairly predictable. I have three colors I remain with. Dark green, dark red and cream. Typically British. But when Jesse built the concrete horse barn and stuccoed it, it was so "adobe" in style I put normal aside and decided to remain with the adobe decor.
It seems so fitting at this time of year.

It was my intention to re-frame the entire trailer, build a large patio around it "pole barn" style with pipe and stucco the trailer to make it far more substantial than anything one could buy. But I'm questioning how one does anything anymore with New Mexico Construction Industries Division shutting one down in the blink of an eye.

There are abode homes here in Lincoln County built 100+ years ago, and they are still standing and in good repair today. There was no government involvement, no laws against building a roof over ones head, no government intervention, yet the houses are simply gorgeous.

The list is endless:

The Dolan House
Tundstall Store
Ellis House & Store
Almost EVERY building within the Old Lincoln Historical district
The Old Mill
The Coe Ranch
Capitan Railway Station

ALL built before New Mexico was US Territory years from becoming a state, let alone formed the Construction Industries Division.

There something wrong. Today we have shoddy houses, immoral & illegal builders that CID ignores. We have multi-million dollar commercial buildings falling down AS they are being built, or shortly AFTER being built. We have such a confusing situation that the normal person can't even start to repair or restore without engineers and blueprints and builders.

The State of New Mexico is running a very efficient extortion racket through the Construction Industries Division. Nothing more and nothing less.

What will it take for our society to return to plain common sense?

Another Day In Paradise

Today I bought a pressure tank guaranteed good and in working order for $80 and hauled it to the property. There just seems to be an overwhelming amount of work to do before I can move into the house, and everything is still held up by the New Mexico Construction Industries Division. This is just so frustrating.

And now the rains start in earnest - again.

If I wanted webbed feet I would have remained in England. I don't think I have ever seen so much rain in New Mexico before, but the forecast is for a dry winter.

As I sat on my land I looked at the Capitan Mountains to the north, and the Sierra Blanca peak, part of the Rocky Mountain Range, to the south (Sierra Blanca means "white mountain" in Spanish) and Nogal Peak between the two and wondered how long it would be before winter comes and finishing the house is virtually impossible.

I was almost tempted to start doing something in the house - just to feel like I had accomplished a little but I looked at the red tags and the threat of a $1,000 fine and remembered my dad's saying, "It's better to be a coward than a corpse."

So much has been going through my mind for the past week. I miss Oscar something terrible. There is an incredible bond between a lap dog like a miniature dachshund who never leaves your side year after year. They become part of you - an important part of you. In my minds eye I still see him jumping in the truck, or sliding under the bedclothes at night. I look at the front passenger seat in my truck and I still see his eyes focused on me.

And I have thought about my mum an awful lot. This is her home, her property, yet she can't be told what is happening for it would simply kill her. Yet time is marching on and I'm unsure if I will ever see her again. The price for this fiasco has been way too high so when I hear government paid employee's give the multiple reasons why I can't help myself renovate this trailer I simply don't buy it.

I have not been able to reach John today and we are supposed to be hauling in more pipe, and metal roof tomorrow. My nerves are shot waiting and worrying.

The recent "special election" is still causing grief with the citizens of Lincoln County and it's motivated many anti-GTR people to form a countywide boycott of all businesses that supported the "Fight Back" pro-tax campaign.

Indian casino impresses

To the editor:

I voted No on the tax issue. How does anybody know what the situation at the track is if the books are closed to the public.

Governor Johnson said years ago that he thought it was a mistake for racetracks to have a casino. He thought a racetrack should be a racetrack and a casino a casino, separate. I agree.

All this weeping and wailing about the track leaving because they can't compete with the Mescalero Apache Tribe Casino. Has an body ever thanked the Mescalero Tribe for running a great casino and bringing in all those gamblers? I've been to the Indian casinos and the food is terrific and the casino is beautiful except for all that ding ding noise and cigarette smoke. Do the taxpayers of Lincoln County want to say we don't approve of the beautiful and well-managed Indian casino and want to support a crappy, failing, rundown track and casino?

I have lived here nearly 70 years and I remember winning $60 the first day the racetrack opened. Lord, I thought that is really easy money. I love the racetrack and the horses. I would hate to think that the people of Ruidoso couldn't come up with some ideas of how to run a good racetrack with beautiful horses without asking for a handout.

A lot of good people in Lincoln County struggle along trying to keep their heads above water. Most don't have any high-falutin connections that will get them help from the Legislature or the county commission but they are surviving and looking forward to better days in Lincoln County. They're not saying, "Help us or we're leaving."

I have never met Mr. Hubbard, even though he and his family have made tremendous contributions to Lincoln County. Nothing personal, Mr. Hubbard, but if you need help packing you can count on me.

Local businesses react to new GRT increase

Business people generally see an increased gross receipts tax, approved by Lincoln County voters this week, as a necessary evil.

And the consensus appeared among retailers and contractors with larger ticket items that the extra 3/16 of 1 percent business retention gross receipts tax would not send local shoppers off the mountain.

And the summer tourists will keep coming to the Ruidoso area and spending money.

Effective Jan. 1, 2011, the gross receipts tax on non-food groceries and non-medicines will be 8.6250 percent in Ruidoso, nearly the granddaddy of sales taxes in New Mexico.

The increased tax revenues will help offset the gaming tax that the Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Billy the Kid Casino pays to the state.

Track officials had said they would move the facility to a more lucrative location in the state without some gaming tax relief to provide parity with tribal casinos.

Nate Dunn, owner of Bonito River Services, a heating and air conditioning outfit, said he was torn with the issue.

"I feel like it was something that we definitely needed to pass," said Dunn. "I didn't like it. I know it's going to be an increase in taxes and I'm not an advocate of that."

Dunn said the business retention gross receipts tax however is a tax that could actually help his business. He rejected the idea that some homeowners would go out of Lincoln County to purchase a furnace or air conditioner because Bonito River Services has built customer loyalty.

Brenda McCracken, a co-owner at McCracken's Home Gallery, said she really struggled with what decision to make.

"But we've got to support him (R.D. Hubbard, owner of the Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Billy the Kid Casino). I've grown up here and the track has always been here. I'm happy with the decision that was made."

McCracken noted the gross receipts tax in Ruidoso is already high. When her business opened in 2003 McCracken said the tax was about 7.1 percent and now it will get closer to 9 percent.

But she said, people are used to the high tax rate and the increase would not affect someone purchasing a high-ticket item.

"Very seldom do I have someone just step back because of the tax."

Sears outlet owner Greg Stewart was emphatic that the increased tax would have no impact on sales.

"I think it's just some minimal amount," he said of the 3/16 of a cent tax increase. "Especially here in Ruidoso Downs, given the difference between Ruidoso's higher tax."

Mark Bickerton, manager of NSide Furniture in Ruidoso said he would do everything possible to keep shoppers buying locally instead of going out of the county.

"Anything to keep the town going, that's a good thing," he said of the retention of the racetrack and casino in Ruidoso Downs.

The gross receipts tax on purchases is of little concern to shoppers that come into Imports, Ect. in Midtown Ruidoso, said store owner Frank Potter.

"Dealing with the people that come through here they are tourists, primarily from Texas, from places like Dallas, San Antonio and Austin," said Potter. "They don't seem to pay much attention to it. I think the Texans are used to high sales taxes and school taxes. They're acclimated to a healthy tax."

Potter said only occasionally does someone ask about the gross receipts tax rate.

On The Road Again...

Yesterday $450 arrived from Robert Huckins, the payment due before or on the 10th of September, which now makes his total payment somewhere around $1,750.

He only owes me $80,400 plus $15% interest, or thereabouts.

Benchmark Engineering is phoning the state to see what, exactly, they need and hopefully that problem will be rectified pretty quickly, and without any further confusion.

I located a pressure tank for $80. And prayerfully, if all goes well, we can go to Carrizozo this week-end and pick up the metal for the roof. Some of the pipe, $600 worth, arrived last Sunday, and another load is being brought in this week-end, so everything should be on-site when we start again. If it's not in the dead of winter by that time.

There are still downed tree's to move, fencing to do, more tree's to cut down. If I could get some help there is enough work to do until those permits are obtained, but then I have to face the daunting task of trying to get the power poles and electricity/plumbing.

During normal times this is a simply gorgeous time of year. Right before the colors change on the tree's the weather turns brisk with a distinct difference in the air. You can "feel" winter coming and it's an exhilarating feeling to wake up at dawn and walk out to feel the cold mountain air.

According to the National Weather Service we may not have a tough winter to face this year, and for me that is both a blessing and a curse.

Dry winter forecast

A strong La Niña forming in the Pacific replaces El Niño

The region could be setting up this coming winter for a 180-degree turnaround from last year when winter lived up to its name.

A rapidly strengthening La Niña has taken shape, the National Weather Service (NWS) office at Albuquerque said in a special briefing this week.

Many people are familiar with El Niño, and its typical increase in precipitation, often felt in southern New Mexico. The El Niño/La Niña Southern Oscillation (ENSO) de-scribes sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean, and its affects on weather.

"When we go from an El Niño to a La Niña, what's actually happening is we're getting changes in the sea surface temperatures," said NWS meteorologist Deirdre Kann. "So with this present La Niña we have temperatures that are colder than normal in the sea surface temperatures in the eastern portion of the tropical Pacific."

The temperatures are monitored by an array of buoys in the ocean. The readings show La Nina conditions are increasing.

"And what we have seen lately is that the El Niño of the winter we just came out of, 2009-2010, faded rapidly in the spring of 2010 and now we have, just as rapidly, preceded down in the La Niña portion of the ENSO cycle here in the early fall of 2010," said NWS hydrologist Ed Polasko. And you have to go back to about 1955 before you find a stronger La Niña condition for this early in the fall."

Oh, Boy, Big Brother

Erma Bombeck asked, "If Life is a Bowl of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits?"

I'd be grateful for the pits right now.

I phoned the Construction Industries Department of the State of New Mexico early this morning. It soon became apparent that every time I opened my mouth the situation went from bad to worse.

The secretary remembered me from the day before. She said, "You told me that you were going to add a room or something."

I told her that I said nothing of the sort. What I had said was that this was a temporary situation and I hoped to make the single wide into a tack room down the road. There was no mention of building, or adding additions, or modifying the original design. I simply said that the long term plan was to use the building as a tack room.

She put me on the phone with an inspector. I explained to him, "Look, I was the victim of Robert Huckins, I need to restore the single-wide to serviceable condition which simply means that I have to replace the broken windows, some molded or missing flooring, put in new doors so I can live in it quickly. I would, eventually like to drop the building onto a foundation, stucco it and make it into a tack room. But that may be 2-3 years from now."

He put me back on the phone with the secretary so I could obtain the permit. She immediately said, "Seeing as you are going to stucco the building we need an engineers report."

Is something wrong here.. permits only last a certain amount of time and I have to hire an engineer to get a permit for something I am going to do "down the road?" On a SINGLE WIDE?

That inspector phoned the inspector who red tagged the trailer and shut the work down. He returned to me and said, "The inspector who red tagged you wants an engineers report."

This is what I learned thus far:

If you replace 45 x 43 windows with 48x48 windows you need an engineers report AND a permit.

If you replace 2x2 rotten molded wood from around the window and replace it with 2x4 "frame house quality studs" you need and engineers report AND a permit.

If you build a roof over the top of a single wide you need a SEPARATE permit.

I asked how much the permits cost. $65.00 was the answer.

In fact no matter WHAT you want to do WITH YOUR OWN PROPERTY you need to spend money on the New Mexico State Government so that they can give a nod of the head and leave you alone.

Where WAS the Construction Industries Division of the State of New Mexico when Robert Huckins was stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from clients, building without insurance/bond, without blueprints, engineers reports, permits, or inspections and NOT ONE person from CID stopped him? In fact.. they HELPED him!

Sally Canning, Laughing Sheep Restaurant, Old Lincoln, NM
I contacted CID (Construction Industries Division) in Santa Fe. They came down and inspected and wrote Huckins a letter stating he had 30 days to make repairs and bring my construction up to code or they would bring him before the "board" for a hearing and could possibly reject/void his license to operate. Robert Huckins ignored the letter, and CID did nothing, either. I have the inspectors names and their letters. - Sally Canning

I telephoned the newspaper and gave an update of what was happening NOW. They put me in contact with a local engineer.
